This blog post is build as a guide or journey some mnight say to help you earn more awareness about those certain topics. I’ll start from the basics so that you can read your way through to the end.
Now let’s dive right into it…
The Definition:
Before we get to the main part of this post you should at first know the basics about productivity. What does it mean at all being productive? What is the overall definition of productivity? Well, let’s read you might be surprised about what productivity actually means … or not;)
Productivity refers to the rate of output per unit of labor, capital or equipment (input). We can measure it in different ways. We can measure the productivity of a factory according to how long it takes to produce a specific good. In the services sector, on the other hand, where units of goods do not exist, it is harder to measure.
Or maybe differently defined:
Writer Charles Duhigg defines productivity as “making certain choices in certain ways” that moves us from being “merely busy” to “genuinely productive” in his book Smarter Faster Better. Tony Robbins’ approach to productivity focuses on ways people can systematize and better manage their lives so they can stop procrastinating and have more time to do what they want.
How do you define productivity? While the end goal for how to be productive in life is personal, productivity is always about getting the results you want with less time and effort. When you’re trying to understand how to be productive, what you’re really seeking is a way to achieve your goals while having time to spend on what matters.
How to stay focused?
So you are coming now with new or maybe old knowledge to me about what productivity is. Well, one thing I left out in the definition is that that being productive and being focused walk hand in hand. You can’t be productive without being focused and you can’t be focused without being productive. Makes sense? Now that you’ve realized the importance of being focused while being productive, there should also be a guide to staying focused, right?
Well, there you go…
Stop multitasking and instead give your full attention to one thing at a time. It’s tough to stay mentally focused when you are ruminating about the past, worrying about the future, or tuned out of the present moment for some other reason. You have probably heard people talk about the importance of ” being present .”
Disconnecting from the Internet is one of the most underrated ways to become more productive. According to research, about half of your time on the Internet is spent procrastinating, and when you’re not in the right mindset to work, that number can go through the roof. Disconnecting from the Internet—even for just an hour or two—will help you hunker down, waste less time, and become more productive when you just don’t feel like it. Especially when the switch to turn the Internet off on your computer, phone, and tablet is just a couple of taps or clicks away, do so if you want to waste less time and get more done.
Staying motivated when trying to focus remind yourself of what you’re working towards. Pinpoint a specific goal you can work towards. Repeat or write down a “focus mantra.” When you know exactly what your purpose and goal are, you can create a focus mantra that you repeat to yourself whenever you get distracted.
Organize your workspace. Whether you’re doing work in your office or studying at home, having a clean space can help you focus and get your work done with much more concentration. Remove anything that can distract you from your work and isn’t relevant to the task.
How to stay productive?
Now you come to the long awaited part: Steps to stay productive. Carefully read those steps and think about if you can add them to your routine. These steps may seem at first sight small to you but can improve your productivity in many levels.
So let’s get started…
Stay Hydrated. Sounds super simple but you’d be surprised at the number of people who forget to stay hydrated throughout the day.
Carefully Schedule. Plan your work based on your most productive times. Since high-energy tasks require the most concentration, you should knock them out first.
Pick one task and then do it. This is very difficult because sometimes our projects aren’t a 30-minute or one-hour job. It may take 8 hours or multiple days. What’s the answer then? Break it up into one task and then do that one task to its completion. But how long should that be? And what’s reasonable? I think most of our days are broken into hour segments. Which then is really 45 to 50 minutes. We have meetings that start on the hour, take a lunch hour, or schedule a call for an hour. Working consistently for 45 minutes on one thing makes sense, but is very difficult.
Give Yourself a Break. Even if your plate is full and you feel like you can’t step away, take a break from your work and go for a walk. Try to take 2-3 minutes breaks every hour at the very minimum. The simple act of getting up and moving around has the power to reset yourself mentally and physically. As a result, you’ll be more productive when you go back to your work. This mindless yet important task will make you feel energized and accomplished.
Find time to walk or exercise. This isn’t about staying in shape or losing weight, not that those are bad things. But exercise can help you be more productive because it increases your alertness. Because it increases your blood flow and cardiovascular health, you’ll be less anxious, more focused, and more capable of dealing with stress.
Stop and reflect. When you’re responsible for getting multiple projects out the door, you have to take a step back and see what’s working, what’s not, what needs to be prioritized, and what needs to be changed. Building in time to review isn’t wasting time but optimizes your work moving forward.
Go to Bed Earlier. If the tips above didn’t work for you, it’s probably a good idea to check the quality of sleep you’re getting.
